Alumina Lumps
Many synthesis gas plants and even some licensors prefer irregular, asymmetrical chunks of pure fused alumina, also known as ALUMINA LUMPS, as both topping media and as bottom support media in SECONDARY reformers and AUTOTHERMAL REFORMERS (ATRs).
It is believed that the random sizes and shapes of ALUMINA LUMPS force the process gas into torturous paths with high velocity turns and as a result helps to trap particulate contamination and therefore slows the increase in bed pressure drop.
